Walter Oglesby was born in 1932, the son of a Drypool bargee. At the age of seven Walter's family split up and he spent seven years in Hessle Cottage Homes, followed by an apprenticeship at a haridresser in Hessle. In 1941 he joined the army, first with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry and later with the Royal Engineers. He got his demob suit in 1946.

On returning to Hull after the war he bgan his career as a gentleman's hairdresser, eventually owning a shop with Farnk Taiton on Hedon Road opposite the docks, where he bacame unofficial hairdresser and confidant to the dockers. As the docks became modernised the dockers donated their old traditional tools to Walter and he turned the shop into a dockers museum. A keen photographer, Walter also took a picture of every docker who came into the shop. He eventually built up the biggest private collection of dockers tools in Europe.

In converstion with Andy Richardson, Walter tells his life story and refelcts on the changes he has seen during the course of his life - a mving and affectionate account of one man's travels through the twentieth century and beyond.
